Bio
Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia is the immediate past Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, having served from January 2017 to January 2025. An accomplished economist and a central banker by training, he played a prominent role in the previous administration.
Prior to his time as Vice President, Dr. Bawumia had a distinguished career at the Bank of Ghana, where he rose to become the Deputy Governor from 2006 to 2009. His expertise in macroeconomic management and financial markets was honed through years of experience in the banking sector.
Dr. Bawumia holds a PhD in Economics from Simon Fraser University in Canada, a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Oxford, and a first degree in Economics from the University of Buckingham. He is recognized for his strong analytical skills and his contributions to economic discourse.
Throughout his tenure as Vice President, Dr. Bawumia was a key figure in driving Ghana’s digitalization agenda, championing initiatives aimed at formalizing the economy and improving efficiency through technology. He remains a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics.
