Andrew is the Co-Founder and Managing Director of Novastar Ventures, a venture catalyst firm assisting the next generation of exceptional entrepreneurs who are designing and executing innovative business models to profitably serve East Africa’s aspiring mass market.
Andrew was born in Lesotho and spent part of his youth in Ethiopia and Kenya. After 20 years in Venture Capital managing 12 different funds across Europe and Asia, his experience now encompasses business creation, corporate finance, capital markets as well as operational experience in innovative, high growth sectors.
Previously Andrew co-founded one of the UK’s leading early-stage venture capital organisations focused on Digital Media and Life Sciences. He built SPARK Ventures (originally NewMedia Investors) from its roots as a corporate finance and capital raising boutique in 1996 to become the manager of multiple funds responsible for a range of investment strategies in the digital media and life science sectors, from pathfinder grants for exploitation of University intellectual property through seed and start up capital to expansion capital for growth enterprises. Andrew then leveraged this experience to promote enterprise as a tool for economic and social regeneration across all sectors. He formed SPARK Impact in 2010 as a vehicle for an emerging impact investing asset class, which launched its first fund in the UK’s Northwest for the biomedical sector and will soon be launching its second regional fund. In 2011 Spark Impact and SpringHill Equity Partners began to collaborate on East African venture opportunities.
A graduate of the London School of Economics, Andrew qualified as a chartered accountant with KPMG. He is married with three children.
