Honourable Minister of Trade and Investment for the Federal Republic of Nigeria

Olusegun Olutoyin Aganga is the Honourable Minister of Trade and Investment for the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Honourable Minister of Finance and the Chairman of the Nigerian National Economic Management Team. As the Governor representing Nigeria on the Governing Boards of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, he was the Chairman of the Joint Board of Governors of the World Bank and the IMF during the October 2010 Annual Meetings. He also served as Governor on the board of the African Development Bank.

He marshalled significant fiscal and budgetary reforms as the Honourable Minister of Finance, including the legal establishment of the Nigerian Sovereign Wealth Fund. While in charge at the finance ministry, Mr. Aganga successfully launched Nigeria’s first sovereign Eurobond offering and personally led the sales effort to institutional investors. He also oversaw the launch of an ambitious job creation strategy and commenced the country’s much needed fiscal consolidation process.

Prior to returning to Nigeria to serve in President Goodluck Jonathan’s Cabinet in 2010, Mr. Aganga was a Managing Director at one of the world’s leading investment banks, Goldman Sachs International, London. In 2006, he led the Goldman Sachs team that gave a presentation on Nigeria’s economic potential to the Nigerian President and his Economic Team. This presentation led to the launch of Nigeria’s Vision 2020 programme.

Before joining Goldman Sachs, he had amassed over 20 years of international financial experience, working as a chartered accountant at Ernst & Young in both Lagos and London. Mr. Aganga has served on a number of boards, including the International Board of Technoserve and as a member of an European Commission Expert Group on Alternative Investment Management.

In November 2011, His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, conferred on Olusegun Aganga, the National Honour, “Commander of the Order of Niger (CON),” in recognition of his significant contribution to national development.

As the Honourable Minister of Trade and Investment in Nigeria, Mr. Aganga successfully chaired the Eighth World Trade Organisation Ministerial Conference in December 2011. The first time an African would chair this important assembly in its 16 years of existence.

He is the founder of the Nigeria Leadership Initiative (NLI), which is part of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. NLI is a non-profit, non-partisan leadership platform for credible and accomplished Nigerians, both at home and in the Diaspora, to play a transformative role in the society.

Mr. Aganga is a professional accountant, with degrees from Oxford University, UK and the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He is married with children.
